About the Book
Wildcraft Medicine: In the Presence of Wonder is a literary tapestry skillfully weaving together the story of plant medicine through the perspective of a land based people. Sheila brings to her writing a passion and intimacy born of her 40 year relationship with the medicinal plants of the pacific northwest. It is a love story!
The story of wildcraft medicine begins with the understanding that the healing plants cannot stand separate from the Land that gives birth to the medicine. An understanding at the foundation of all indigenous medicine traditions. Wildcraft Medicine: In the Presence of Wonder encompasses more than the medicine and how to use it, it weaves together personal stories of time spent with the plants, ecological sensitivity, concerns and insights, along with practical instruction for usage in first aid with tried and tested remedies and recipes. It is a blend of traditional indigenous teachings, inspirational quotes, poetry, and illustrations, all held together with wild plant stories and the ethnobotany of over forty indigenous plants.
A valuable resource for those folks interested in herbal medicine, ethnobotany, ecology or simply indigenous medicine enthusiasts and plant lovers.
With a foreword by Della Rice ‘Hyamiciye Sylvester, Cowichan elder and Medicine Woman
About the Author
I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, and found my passion for wild indigenous medicine at the age of sixteen. It has guided me all my life. I have learned my craft through my relationship with the plants and traditional elders. Writing is my voice and I use it to express my passion for the Earth, ecology and to raise awareness of the Earth’s medicines.
I lived for 30 years in the Cowichan Valley, on Vancouver Island, where I raised a family, and taught the wild medicine way, before moving to the Sunshine Coast. I am now in the rural community of Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia, on the traditional territory of the Shishalh nation, where I continue to teach and pass on the knowledge of indigenous medicine, and the need for preservation of Canada’s wild lands.
